"The peaches and strawberries at Witt Farms grow near the top of Hog Mountain in a beautiful part of Blount County, Alabama. Three generations of farmers - Kenneth, Jimmy and Aaron - handle the operations for the 100+ acre farm and it's ten greenhouses. The farm was actually started by Kenneth's father, James Witt, in the 1950s.
Today, the Witts also grow blackberries, blueberries, plums, nectarines, scuppernongs, muscadines, tomatoes, squash, okra, cucumbers, cantaloupes, watermelons and bedding plants. They do lots of wholesale business with their produce and plants, but the recent focus on farmers markets has really increased their retail side. "We like to grow niche vegetables and varieties such as green strawberries for chefs now," says Jimmy. "The Market at Pepper Place has charged us to diversify. We are now choosing quality over quantity more and more..."
