This fourth generation family farm is located in southeast Alabama, less than twenty minutes from the Alabama-Florida state line. Producing some of the best tasting fruits and vegetables since 1952m Aplin Farms is a true southern gem. Attending about 10 produce markets each week, Aplin Farms was one of the first farms to sign up for The Market at Pepper Place in the summer of 2000.

With a long growing season, Aplin Farms is proud of their beautiful farmland and participation in their local community. They host a large pumpkin patch each year and host schools and church tours on the farm through the month of October. Stop by and visit with them if you're ever in the Slocomb community!

Andrew and Laurie Beth Kesterson are the owners of Belle Meadow Farm, located in Tuscaloosa county. This young farming couple grows everything from potatoes and dill to corn, squash and eggplant. Their goal is to grow and sell the freshest, chemical free produce around. They also enjoy raising herbs, sunflowers and a few varieties of fruit. While not certified, the Kesterson's farm is managed according to organic practices. Their emphasis is on permaculture and beneficial insects. Organic sprays to control pests are a last resort. Belle Meadow Farm has about ten acres under cultivation, along with a hoop house and greenhouse.

Blackwood Crossing Greenhouses started business in 1978 in Cleveland, Alabama in Blount County. They are a family owned and operated business, operating 52,000 square feet of greenhouse space. They grow hanging baskets and potted plants, 10" to 4.5" size pots of primarily blooming and seasonal plants. Blackwood Crossing specializes in a good selection of top quality plants.

In the spring, more than 30 varieteies of hanging basket plants and combination baskets are grown at this local nursery including geraniums, ferns, dahlias, zinnias to name a few. They take pride in making their living on doing something that brings joy and beauty to others!

When it comes to Postell Farms and Caver's Farms, one thing is true: you can't talk about one without talking about the other! When Mrs. Postell Married a Caver, the two families combined their farmland and farming methods. Now a fifth generation family farm, the Postell and Caver's own more than 175 acres in Verbena, Alabama. This family farm duo has been a part of The Market since the beginning in the summer of 2000! They are affectionately known by regular market shoppers as the "pea farmers", because they grow three types of Alabama peas each year, planting them six different times through out they season!

Andy and Kaye Smith began farming in their backyard in the early 2000's as a hobby. The enjoyment grew and in 2007, four acres were cleared to expand the farm. Since then, they Smith's have relocated permanently to the farm, expanding the acreage to nine acres and grow blueberries, satsumas, Meyer lemons, grapefruit, oranges and kumquats. They are proud to say they love what they do and grow produce that is not only organically grown, but is pesticide free.

City Bee Company practices all natural urban bee keeping. Their methods do not involve chemicals or additives to the hives, honey or wax. They avoid unnecessary hive manipulations (that are so commonly used) to increase production or elicit certain behaviors from the bees.

City Bee's honey harvesting is done responsibly to ensure that enough honey is left on the hive for the bees. They choose to do this so that the bees can feed on their own natural food source, rather than supplementing feedings using unhealthy sugars or high fructose corn syrup.

The idea of Dayspring Dairy was born while Greg and Ana Kelly had professional careers. They felt led to do something different with their day to day lives. After visiting a sheep dairy in Tennessee in 2010, they say they knew right away that it's where God was leading them.

Greg and Ana left their big city life and jobs in 2011 to begin their family farm. With a sucessful background in food styling and recipe developing for top media companies, Ana Kelly is the head cheese-maker and culinary mastermind at the family farm.

Dayspring Dairy is Alabama's first and only sheep dairy. The Kelly's are proud to be the state's only makers of farmstead sheep milk cheeses!

Justin Hill is the founder of the Eastaboga Bee Company. Located near Lincoln, Alabama, his bees live on the land his great-grandfather farmed. Justin says he has about 300 or so hives that he maintains. He says he never tires of taking care of his bees and learns something new every day!

Owner Kate Graham has been growing flowers and designing floral arrangements for six years. She's proud to say she is self-taught and her passions stems from her love of all things beautiful. Fig and Fern is a natural outgrowth of Kate's love of flowers, nature, color and creativity. Her three small children are the helping hands in her garden!

Charles and Shiyrah Crowther began growing mushrooms in 2004. They grow their mushrooms on oak and sweet gum logs. No chemicals or pesticides are ever used. The duo located in Montevallo, Alabama takes pride in growing their mushrooms in a natural setting, outside in dappled sunlight under a canopy of trees. They also grow other varieties of mushrooms such as golden oysters, blue oysters and lion's mane. The two also gather wild edible mushrooms too!

Why is Happy Trails Flower Farm allowed to sell at The Market in Pepper Place if they're not an Alabama farm?
State Rules and Guidelines allow growers over the state line to participate in Alabama markets, if they are within a certain number of miles over state boundaries. Happy Trails Flower Farm conforms to these guidelines.  Unlike in Alabama, the state of Mississippi is known for its large number and variety of flower farms.

"Trent Boyd says the customer relationships he's built at the Market at Pepper Place have become so strong and loyal that he will sometimes take produce requests. "I'll grow certain types of tomatoes for certain customers," he says with pride. If you see Trent or his wife Jennifer at the Saturday market representing Harvest Farm, you'll likely find rows of their delicious heirloom tomatoes or even strawberries (in the right season). In addition to those main crops, the Boyd's also grow onions, collards, broccoli, pumpkins, kale, apples, peaches and blueberries on their 50-acre farm in Fairview, Alabama about 60 miles north of Birmingham.

Farming is nothing new to the Boyds. Their children will be the fifth generation on their land that was first farmed in 1909. Trent and Jennifer began farming at Harvest Farm in 1998 and incorporated more natural and organic practices. They eventually took over full operations ten years later.

As the focus shifted to locally-sourced food, their business model did as well, and they now supply to high end restaurants, CSA programs and markets such as the Market at Pepper Place, where they've been vendors for more than two years now. It's a partnership that has paid off, and Trent says that he and Jennifer love that they overall management of the market is extremely efficient and organized. "The Market at Pepper Place has allowed us to expand our business and buy equipment," he says. "By being here, our farm has much more name recognition and has acquired a positive reputation..."

The Henke family moved to the Cullman area from Germany in the early 1800's and began farming. In the early 1900's the Henke and Schaeffel families combined their farmland through marriage, extending the property.

North Alabama Wagyu is owned and operated by Hennessee Farms out of Athens, Alabama. The family farm strives to provide high quality beef products to surrounding communities by using Angus cows crossed with their two full blooded Wagyu bulls. Wagyu cattle originated from Japan and is most known for their marbling, tenderness, and amazing flavor. North Alabama Wagyu's beef is grass-fed and grass-finished, never given any antibiotics or any additional hormones. They take pride in using a federally approved USDA processing facility to vacuum package their beef, which is frozen until final purchase. Beef may be purchased by each individual cut or buy the quarter, half, or whole.

The farm has 18,000 square feet of greenhouses and field grown crops. Owls Hollow currently sells their hydroponic lettuces and organically grown produce to a wide variety of consumers including local restaurants, local grocery stores, as well as featuring their farm Community Support Agriculture box year-round.

Elizabeth Sandlin's family began running a farm in 1971. Elizabeth and her parents grew produce and sold to the public all throughout her life. She took over their family farm in 1986, transitioning to greenhouses, plasticulture and well irrigation. The Sandlin's raise all of their products from seed. They transplant and harvest them by hand - recyclable materials are used on the farm.

In 2016, Jacob and wife Payton Sandlin took over the family farm full time. They raised all of their products from seed in their greenhouse before transplanting to the fields.

Southern Foothills grows shiitake and oyster mushrooms year-round as well as seasonal varieties including: lion's mane, maitake, reishi, king oyster, and chestnut. They grow their mushrooms on a natural substrate mixture of Alabama-milled oak sawdust, organic wheat bran, and organic whole grains. Influenced by their combined backgrounds in organic agriculture and environmental analysis, Brian and Liz never use any synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. They are proud to say their mushrooms are USDA certified organic! In all, they use one of nature's best recyclers (fungi) to convert a local and natural by-product (sawdust) into fresh mushrooms, rich with nutritional and medicinal benefits.

Spinks Farm is a family farm located in Hayden, Alabama with roughly 20 acres in production. Troy Spinks is a retired school teach of 39 years at Hayden High School. Troy's wife, Nancy, is a beautician and owner of a local beauty salon. Their oldest daughter, Torie, helps with the farm and is also in outside sales in the metro-Birmingham area.

Spinks' Farm began in 1978 as a working college fund for Troy and Nancy's daughters; both are now graduates of The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Today, Troy farms full time and enjoys bringing goods to The Market each Saturday at Pepper Place.

Honoring both her parents and her grandparents heritage, Deborah Stone founded Stone Hollow Farmstead in 1999 with her husband, Russell, and daughters Fallon and Alexandra. The Stone Family comes from a line of Alabama gardeners and farmers, sharing their history in all facets of the farmstead.

"Hal and Dordie Hayes took an unconvential path to found their farm. To begin, they had no experience farming at all, so every decision -good or bad- was a lesson learned. When they opened a produce stand in Clanton, Alabama in 1988, they simply named it after their only son, Todd. Naturally, that boy would grow up helping his dad harvest the peaches for which the Hayes have become known.

They later added blueberries and blackberries to the operation, which spans more than 100 acres. Today, Todd and Hal still work the peach orchards toghether, while Dordie and Todd's wife, Tasha, run the produce stand, which sit off Exit 205 on I-65, and also features other produce, plus homemade ice cream, jams and jellies.

They Hayes have always sold wholesale, but the popularity of farmers markets has allowed them to be more profitable, thans to retail sales. "This has kept us farming", says Dordie. They have been selling at the Market at Pepper Place has helped our farm because of the high colume of sales it allows. The big crowds, dozens of shoppers and publicity help us move our peaches and  blueberries to the public."
