A Portia Caldwell Dessert

A Portia Caldwell Dessert

A PORTIA CALDWELL DESSERT

A Portia Caldwell Dessert is a dessert that is always made from scratch but what distinguishes this dessert from others is its distinct taste and moistness that comes from using only the best ingredients and using time tested techniques that were learned as a little girl watching and helping my dad bake. The name of my business was inspired by one of my customers who after coming back from a function would often say to me, "they had cake but it was not a Portia Caldwell cake." Give it a try. A Portia Caldwell dessert always ends with a smile.

Bronnie's Brittle

Bronnie's Brittle

BRONNIE'S BRITTLE

Bronnie's Brittle is my father's family recipe of peanut brittle. Years ago he began making the candy for holiday gifts and it eventually became a town novelty. Our brittle is light, airy and super crunchy. During the past year I have been experimenting with the brittle and have added new ingredients such as milk chocolate, butterscotch and a hint of sea salt. In addition, the breaking of the brittle creates an excellent dessert topping for one's favorite ice cream or gelato. This has resulted in a variety of new taste choices to go with the popular southern candy - peanut brittle.

We believe the best things in life are sweet, so we aim to provide that sweetness in every bite of one of our homemade, delicious desserts! I began baking, like most little girls, in my Easy Bake Oven. My granddaddy was my number 1 fan! It wasn't until my adulthood, however, that I realized baking sweet treats didn't just give me great joy, but that it was also a God-given gift. What started as a cake or pie between family, friends and co-workers has grown so much bigger than I could have imagined. We currently offer about 20 different cake flavors along with 3 deep dish pies. Some of the most popular include Red Velvet Cheesecake, Strawberry Shortcake and Deep Dish Peach Cobbler. There is a little piece of my heart in every dessert I create and I will forever desire to share it with the world!

I'm starting slowly here at Pepper Place with some of my favourite baked goods from down under and will be opening a Food Truck to serve brekky and lunch as the year progresses. I used to work in consulting but left to study patisserie and cuisine at Le Cordon Bleu and then worked as a Chef in Sydney for 4 years. I then moved to Melbourne, learning to make cheese, small goods (cured meats) and worked with fermentation products. I have traveled extensively thru the Southern Hemisphere and Europe, sampling the cuisine, taking local cooking classes and believe in authentic flavours with quality ingredients that are respected. I loved shared tables and believe that food brings communities together and hope to build a community of like minded here in Birmingham that love food, family and shared times!

Maw Maw's Marinara

Maw Maw's Marinara

MAW MAW'S MARINARA

Our story is inspired by mom, also known as “Maw Maw”. Her home-canned tomatoes sustained our family through many winters. She was in the kitchen every day cooking and creating wonderful meals for us. Naturally, I developed a desire for creating meals and new recipes from fresh and nutritious ingredients. Although Maw Maw did not actually make a marinara sauce, she did make many delicious meals with her tomatoes. Her passion in the kitchen inspired my passion in the kitchen. Through her love, patience, and instruction, my creativity was born.

Over the years I have created many recipes, including what is now known as, "Maw Maw’s Marinara". She is my inspiration and our sauce is a tribute to her. So, thank you Maw Maw - we love you and we hope this special recipe reminds you that you will forever be my inspiration!

Magnolia Mixes

Magnolia Mixes

MAGNOLIA MIXES

Our goal at Magnolia Mixes is to provide you with affordable, all natural, high quality gluten free dry mixes that are simple to use and that enable you to create delicious, healthy, bakery quality, gluten free baked goods. Simply: Mix-Bake-Enjoy!

We started Magnolia Bread Company in 2013. It was to be a family business, with our children and their families involved in the business.  We baked three varieties of bread:   Original White, Whole Wheat, and Gluten Free.  All three breads were successful, but it was the Gluten Free Bread that changed the direction of our business.

We received many inquiries about our gluten free bread, many requests for this bread, as well as requests for other gluten free items.  We began to research gluten free grains with a goal of creating foods that would build good health and be appealing in texture and taste.  This last goal has become very important to us, since I was diagnosed with Celiac disease and my family often eats gluten free foods along with me.  It was a challenge finding gluten free food that tasted appetizing, and had a desirable texture.

As a result, I began to create my own blends of gluten free flours, which led to creating my own mixes. I started with a pancake mix because when our four children were growing up, Saturday mornings meant Dad was home, and Mom would cook stacks of hot, fluffy, pancakes with lots of butter and maple syrup.  Suddenly those pancakes that were supposed to be light and fluffy were more difficult to achieve with gluten free flours.  After much testing; I can confidently offer our pancake mix for light, moist, delicious gluten free pancakes.  You and your family can also make wonderful memories of your pancake breakfasts.

We plan on expanding our line of gluten free mixes; making them safe for anyone needing gluten free foods, making them affordable, delicious, and finally making them simple, quick and easy to make.

Monroe Sausage

Monroe Sausage

MONROE SAUSAGE

Monroe Sausage is as rich in history as its flavor. The original company became a household name in Monroe County, Alabama way back in the late 1940's when they threw sausage biscuits from their float during the annual "Monroeville Hog Festival".

That company was eventually sold to partners who then set out to make the best sausage anyone had ever tasted. They spent months working on the recipe and experimenting with spices and seasonings. Words is they even had to go all the way to Atlanta to get the seasonings they needed to make it just right! Well, people loved it. In fact, you could hardly find a family gathering or cookout that didn't feature Monroeville Brand Smoked Sausage. Kids grew up with it as part of their lives. And as it's fame and flavor spread through word of mouth, it wasn't unusual for folks from all over Alabama to get you to pick 'em up a bunch if they heard you were passin' through Monroe County. Enjoy the delicious smokiness of the legendary Hickory Smoked Monroe Sausage each week at The Market!

The Fresh Squeeze

The Fresh Squeeze

THE FRESH SQUEEZE

The Fresh Squeeze started as a way to unite this team's passion of being in the kitchen, sustainability and nutrition. A few years ago, co-owner Aaryn Melnikoff received a juicer as a birthday present and immediately begin to understand the quality and result of raw juice. Growing up he was mainly exposed to the pasteurized, sugar laden juices found in grocery stores. Aaryn describes the process of pasteurizing juice as actually killing the micro-nutrients and live enzymes from the produce that are most beneficial for the consumer; it also degrades the taste, which is why sugar is added back to the juice. The Fresh Squeeze team has a goal: to enjoy great tasting juices, unpasteurized with all of the natural healthy benefits while sourcing local ingredients. The opportunity to impact people's healthy and well being through their products ignited their motivation to create The Fresh Squeeze.
